The whole picture
Look at the whole picture first. The sky and mountains stay soft, and only the figure and the pavilion are drawn sharply.
Look at spot 1
The moon is one flat disc of pale yellow. It is laid down without an outline, which gives the misty night feeling.
Look at spot 2
The seated figure is outlined with thin lines and filled with pale color. The fine line gives a calm, neat feeling.
Look at spot 3
Only the inside of the pavilion glows a warm orange. Among the quiet colors, your eyes gather here.
Five colors
The ground is grey-brown and pale beige. A little pine teal and the pavilion's orange become the accents.
Where your eyes go
Join the moon, the figure and the pavilion and you get a triangle. Your eyes move from the moon to the figure, then to the pavilion.
Try it yourself
Name just three things for the eye to visit, such as a moon, a person and a house.

Example sentence
A quiet night with a full moon over mountains, a pine tree and a small pavilion
- Pick three spots at most for the eye to rest on. Any more and the picture blurs.
- Put one subject, one light and one mood into a single sentence for a clearer result.
- Paint the same sentence in different styles to see the differences between them most clearly.
